This particular activity was used late in the semester during a unit in which we discussed the factors that influence an individual’s religious identity, but the activity can easily be adapted to other contexts by modifying the question students are asked. This activity encourages the entire class to participate in class discussion and introduces students to a variety of perspectives on a single religious topic. Description of the strategy: Prior to class, students watch an online collection of videos in which individuals reflect on their religious identity http: Instructors should modify these questions to fit their pedagogical context; 3 After two minutes, students switch partners. Students must find a new partner.

Game Reviews Free Classroom Posters I’ve created this special page on my blog to house all of the posters I have created for my classroom over the past few years. I have made them free for you to download and use in your own classroom as a way to say thank you to the thousands of people I’ve stolen teaching ideas from on the internet.
For each poster, I have tried to provide a PDF copy and an editable copy. The PDF copy preserves my font choices, but you cannot edit it. If you download the editable copy, the fonts will change unless you have fonts I used installed on your computer. Almost all of the fonts I use can be downloaded from Font Squirrel. I teach high school math, but teachers of other subjects and grade levels should be able to find some useful posters as well for their classrooms.
The majority of these posters are made to print on letter sized paper. I often print these on colored cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This lets me reuse the same posters from year to year. Though, if you look at my classroom pictures, you will realize that nothing tends to stay in the same spot. And, plenty of other posters get rotated in and out. I’ve tried to include pictures of these posters in my classroom, but if you want to see my classroom as a whole I will share those links, too.
Don’t miss a lesson plan!
How many seconds are there in 2 hours? It can also be used quantitatively using units of measurement. Students need to learn both how to measure time and how to convert between units of time. Listen to this post as a podcast: When I worked with student teachers on developing effective lesson plans, one thing I always asked them to revise was the phrase “We will discuss.” We will discuss the video. We will discuss the story. The problem wasn’t them; in most of the classrooms.
Return to Content In the Classroom: This page provides some practical suggestions that can be used in the regular classroom as well as the special education classroom. By looking through a given list of interventions, a teacher will be able to select one or more strategies that are suited to a specific child in a specific environment. Pause and create suspense by looking around before asking questions. Randomly pick reciters so the children cannot time their attention.
Signal that someone is going to have to answer a question about what is being said. Ask a simple question not even related to the topic at hand to a child whose attention is beginning to wander. Develop a private running joke between you and the child that can be invoked to re-involve you with the child. Stand close to an inattentive child and touch him or her on the shoulder as you are teaching.

Can’t find what you are looking for? That means a new batch of students to get to know, students who need to be made comfortable in your classroom, and who need to get to know each other. And how to accomplish this? The Trouble with Most Icebreakers I planned to create a nice big post with dozens of icebreaker ideas you could choose from. They require students to take massive social risks with people they barely know. So many of the icebreakers I found asked students to publicly share some kind of personal information.
But to most kids—especially once they get into the middle and high school range—being different is the worst thing you can be. No one really gets to know anyone. So I have scrapped my plan to curate good icebreakers from the Internet. What I like about all of them is that they get students talking, but require very little social risk. I should add that I take no credit for inventing these games.

After a bit of context setting, vocab work and guided discussion in the first hour, I sit them down and tell them to write 5 questions for a first date. Antiquarians studied history with particular attention to ancient artifacts and manuscripts, as well as historical sites. Antiquarianism focused on the empirical evidence that existed for the understanding of the past, encapsulated in the motto of the 18th-century antiquary, Sir Richard Colt Hoare , “We speak from facts not theory”. Tentative steps towards the systematization of archaeology as a science took place during the Enlightenment era in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Flavio Biondo , an Italian Renaissance humanist historian, created a systematic guide to the ruins and topography of ancient Rome in the early 15th century, for which he has been called an early founder of archaeology. Antiquarians of the 16th century, including John Leland and William Camden , conducted surveys of the English countryside, drawing, describing and interpreting the monuments that they encountered. Establish Consequences for Misbehaving Effective teachers are passionate about educating their students. They want to spend their time teaching, not dealing with classroom disruptions. Here are some classroom management tips to help teachers settle problems, or prevent them from occurring, so that they can spend more of the classroom hour on teaching and learning.
If they are talking, pause and look toward them. If in front of the class, continue with the lesson but walk toward the problem students and stop near their seats, while still teaching. If there is a discussion going, direct a question to the student who is not paying attention or misbehaving. Calling on a person by name brings almost anyone out of his or her reverie.
If non-verbal cues are disregarded, the next step will be imposing discipline measures within the classroom such as having them stay a few minutes after class or changing their seat. Let Students Choose Their Seats At the beginning of the school year, let students sit where they want for a few days. Then about the third day tell them that the next class period they should find a seat that they will keep permanently all year.
Give Incentives to Do Their Best on Assignments If an assignment will not be collected and graded individually, students may feel they have no reason to make an effort to do a good job on the no-credit assignment. For instance, a teacher will often do an ungraded warm-up exercise to begin the class hour. If that paper has no mistakes, then the whole class will have a shorter or no warm-up the next day.
If a randomly selected paper is perfect, that student instantly is the class hero.

Speed dating, icebreakers and PowerPoint Posted on by Elisabeth Horn A couple of months ago my son, who lives in Stockholm, Sweden, at the moment, sent me a card game upon request, Icebreaker. I had read about it, gotten curious and thought it might come in handy in the classroom at some point. The game is simple enough, each player takes a card and has to answer the question on that particular card.

Helens, located in southwestern Washington about 50 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon, is one of several lofty volcanic peaks that dominate the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest; the range extends from Mount Garibaldi in British Columbia, Canada, to Lassen Peak in northern California. Geologists call Mount St. Helens a composite volcano or stratovolcano , a term for steepsided, often symmetrical cones constructed of alternating layers of lava flows, ash, and other volcanic debris.
Composite volcanoes tend to erupt explosively and pose considerable danger to nearby life and property. In contrast, the gently sloping shield volcanoes, such as those in Hawaii, typically erupt nonexplosively, producing fluid lavas that can flow great distances from the active vents. Although Hawaiian-type eruptions may destroy property, they rarely cause death or injury. Before , snow-capped, gracefully symmetrical Mount St. Helens was known as the “Fujiyama of America.
Helens, other active Cascade volcanoes, and those of Alaska form the North American segment of the circum-Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a notorious zone that produces frequent, often destructive, earthquake and volcanic activity.
